The Bay To Breakers race was started in 1906. Runners start at the foot of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge (i.e. the Bay) and run the 7 miles across town to the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Beach (i.e. The Breakes/Waves), thus the name. It was begun as a way to lift folk's spirits just after the great Earthquake in April 1906.
Much of the race goes through Golden Gate Park and, in several areas, bands play live music to help the runners along
We had to be there at 5:30 in the morning to set all the extra equipment up.....sorry guys
Over the years the race has become a San Francisco tradition. Thus, even though it's officially a race, it's also a party for many. You might say it's San Francisco's answer to Mardi Gras. Some folks wear costumes, and some fols wear.................... :-)
