Buddy Holly

Feb. 2009

IT'S BEEN 50 YEARS !

It was Feb.3rd 1959 when THAT plane went down carrying Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens & The Big Bopper. So I thought I'd share a little of my Record & Photo collection with Y'All. I will be updating this through out the month so stay tuned gang. In the mean time enjoy.

Joe B. Mauldin (Upright Bass), Charles Hardin Holley (Buddy Holly on Guitar) & Jerry Ivan Allison (Drums)

Together they were know as The Crickets

Some REAL early shots of the band

Not bad lookin' for a bunch of Rock'n Rollers

No question in my mind, these guys ROCKED!

A Ticket stubb from their tour of England. I couple of school kidz named John Lennon & Paul McCartney were in the audience

Here's the 1957 single that put them on the charts

Here's an E.P. that came out under Buddy's name as a Solo Act. "E.P." stood for "Extended Play" They were 'Mini' albums. They were pressed as seven (7) inch 45 R.P.M. records but, unlike singles, had more than one song on each side. They were also sold with hard cardboard covers like twelve (12) inch L.P. albums.

Here's another E.P. from the 50's

My favorite Buddy Holly song "Rock Around With Ollie Vee". Me and the guys do this one live. It was written by Buddy's friend, Sonny Curtis and was originally about their childhood Baby Sitter. Sonny went on to play with the Crickets after Buddy's death and wrote the song "Walk Right Back" , a Top-10 single for the Everly Brothers in 1962

Some "Solo" Pics of Buddy

I believe this one is from the last Winter Tour in 1959

Ricardo Valenzuela ..... oh yeah, we know him as Ritchie Valens

Ritchie's 1958 Double Sided smash. That's right, "La Bamba" was considered the "B" side or "Flip" side of the single "Donna"

J.P.Richardson, i.e. The Big Bopper. A radio Disc Jockey from Texas who had a huge hit of his own with "Chantilly Lace"

From the last tour. I found this on a MySpace. I have never seen this one before!

Buddy and a friend, Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers

Another of Buddy's friends. Yeppers gang, that's Waylon Jennings who went on to be a huge star in Country music. Waylon was on the last tour and played Bass for Buddy though he was not a member of the Crickets. He gave up his seat on the plane because the Big Bopper was coming down with the flu and wanted to get a flu shot from and some much needed rest at the next stop on the tour. Buddy produced and played guitar on Waylon's very first record. Below is a copy of it:

Okay gang, I hope you enjoyed this little "Viewseum" I will be adding "Stuff" in the days to come.

'Nuff Said
