KYA 1260 A.M.

May 2010

Photos by: Dave Crimmen & Gary Mora

If you grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and you grew up listening to A.M. Radio before there was F.M. you'll remember there were only three stations worth listening to. The three stations were K.F.R.C. 610 A.M. K.D.I.A. "Lucky 13" 1310 A.M. and "The BOSS of the Bay" K.Y.A. 1260 A.M.

I recently became friends on Facebook with one of the D.J.s at KYA , Gary Mora. I also became a fan on KYA's Facebook page. I was so inspired by KYA's web page that I had to dive into a lot of my archives and share this with you all. This took me a while to put together gang so I hope Y'All enjoy this. I made these a little big so everyone could read the small print. Sorry if it took a while for this page to upload but It'll be worth it! Gary sent me this "Pic" of him with Roy Orbison, very kewl eh?

K.Y.A. used to publish their Top-30 in the San Francisco Examiner. Here, it's 1965 Elvis Presley is in the Top-10 with the Rolling Stones and Them among others. For those that don't remember, Them was the original group who's lead singer's name was Van Morrison. On Billboards National Hot-100 "Gloria" only peaked at No. 99 but was a Top-10 hit for the Shadows Of Night. Here in San Francisco, the original version by Them was Top-10

January of 1966 and the Beatles are No. 1 with their "Double Sided" Hit single "Day Tripper" and "We Can Work It Out". Ronny and the Daytonas are in the Top-10 with their song "Sandy". On Billboard's National Hot-100 chart, their only Top-10 song was "GTO".

Some of you might have heard of a singer named Whitney Houston, did you know her Mom was in a group called the Sweet Inspirations ? Whitney's cousin is also on these charts, her name, Dionne Warwick

On Billboard's National Charts, "If I Can Dream" by Elvis Presley made it up to No. 12 but here in San Francisco, it was a Top-10 single. This chart is from January 1969. Now most of us on "The Coast" didn't know who Bob Seger was until his 'Breakthrough' hit "Night Moves" from 1976 but here he is at No. 17 with his very first hit single "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man", The song also peaked at No. 17 on Billboard's National Charts. I really don't remember this record being played but obviously it was a hit at the "Boss Of The Bay". The single was actually billed as the "Bob Seger System" pre-"Silver Bullett Band"

A chart from early 1969

Nationally on Billboard, "In The Ghetto" by Elvis Presley went to No. 3 but here in "The City" it almost knocked the Beatles out of the No. 1 spot. This chart from the spring of 1969

From the " Summer of '69 ".........isn't that a song??????????

My Man, Presley makes it back to the No. 1 spot after years. In the No. 6 spot is the entire album "Abby Road". It was released before the single "Something" / "Come Together" . So the station just posted the whole album into the Top-10. As I recall, they were playing the whole album anyway. At No. 18 is R.B. Greaves with a song called "Take A Letter Maria". R.B. had an uncle that had a few hit records of his own, his name...Sam Cooke

On the national charts, "Suspicious Minds" was No. 1 for only one week but here in San Francsico he was on top for a pair of weeks. There's two different groups on the charts, The Cuff Links with a song called "Tracy" and a little lower down "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies. The lead singer for both groups was a guy named Ron Dante. Ron went on to become a very successful producer, one of his clients was Barry Manilow.

It's late 1969 and it was a time when Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Gladys Knight, Led Zepplin, the Guess Who and Michael Jackson, then in the Jackson 5, were all on the same chart at the same time. You'd need to listen to five different radio stations today to take in that much variety of music today.

Okay, for those of you not old enough to remember, Bobby Sherman, you might say a was the Pre-Historic Taylor Swift. Actually, Taylor DOES write her own music and is really good at it. Bobby ???? last I heard he was driving an ambulance in the Los Angeles area. In an interview, he's very much at peace with his success from the late 60's early 70's and feels he's making a positive contribution with his current job.

From early 1970. My fav band, Creedence Clearwater Revival had a double sided hit and my fav solo artist Mr. Presley waz on the charts too.

The last Beatle single to go No. 1. The "Flip" side of the Beatle single was a George Harrison song called "For You Blue" and it did chart for a while and did get air play on K.Y.A. though it is not listed here on this specific week's chart. The single was listed as a "Double Sided" hit on Billboard's national Chart with both sides going No. 1

I do remember loving the funky take on "Sugar Sugar" by Wilson Pickett. I actually have this 45 still and not the Archies version. 1970 was a tough year for music, The Beatles, The Supremes and Simon & Garfunkel all broke up. Jimi Hendrix & Janis Joplin died, Jim Morrison would follow in 1971. About the only good news, for me anyway, was that Presley was in the Top - 10 and performing Live again. I also remeber liking "Lay Down" by Melanie and the Edwin Hawkins Singers (Not Listed here) and "Teach Your Children" by Crosby, Stills , Nash & Young.

These are little hand outs that i still have of KYA's Top - 60 hits of the week.

You could pick up these little "freebies" in the 1960's and 1970's from your local record store.

The two record stores that I was going to at that time were the Westlake Music Center, Westlake Shopping Center in Daly City CA and the Music Box at the brand new, all in door, Serramonte Shopping Center also in Daly City , CA.

Whew, well I hope you enjoyed some of my "Stuff". I've been told I should start a museum but I think the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame has that covered. Thanx to Gary Mora and all the folks at KYA Radio who are STILL ROCKIN' !

I'll plant you now and dig you later

Dave
